It is the vision of Engo Free State to enable older persons across the Free State to age with security and dignity, by providing holistic care services from a Christian frame of reference.
Engo Elderly Care Centre provide the essential service of caring and loving for the elderly and the service aims to promote the rights of the elderly, prevent abuse and empower them with knowledge and skills. Efforts are also made to help them function in the community for as long as possible.
Services are provided to persons over the age of 60 years and include the following:
- Programs aim to keep the older person in the community for as long as possible, in other words community-based care, support and development.
- Protection of older persons against neglect, abuse and exploitation.
- Housing for economic and sub-economic older persons.
- Residential care of debilitated elderly persons.
- To provide affordable services to older people in an organized manner to promote their quality of life; so that they may live and die with dignity.
Community Services
Community services help older people to function in the community for as long as possible. The services are aimed at the most needy eldery people in the community. Most services have service centres or community programs and thus reach out to seniors in the surrounding community, including the informal communities.
Various other services are also provided:
- counseling and support for older people and family members,
- recreational activities,
- transport,
- revenue generating projects,
- support for Alzheimer’s residents,
- hair and nail care,
- guidance on resources, pensions and administration of funds.
Engo hosts an annual Jukskei tournament, ‘’kieriekaskenades’’ and choir festival.
Residential Care
The centres offer a person-centered and holistic care program to older people according to their individual needs and circumstances.
How can volunteers get involved?
Without the involvement of the community, services will not be able to be rendered. We need volunteers to support the centers in terms of donations, help with lodging of needy residents, in kind donations, groceries, special rates, for example, maintenance work and so on, which ensures that the service can survive.
We also need volunteers to help with presenting activity programs such as bingo, lectures, aerobics, arts and crafts etc. and fundraising projects.

Engo’s elderly care centers accommodate many needy elderly people who have no family and who only receive a SASSA pension and we really need help with accommodation bills for these residents.
- There is always a need for toiletries for needy residents.
- Anything to spoil our needy Elderly with such as a cookie or rusks, sweets etc.
- Any items that can be used for arts and crafts, as well as wool and crochet yarn.
